This is a very common question. The answer to this question will be rather subjective if you ask me because “ best” would mean many things such as handling, fuel efficiency, engine and body reliability and so on. However, it’s actually possible to categorize vehicles depending on how long they last.
Careful again about “lasting” for a vehicle can last long because it spends most of it’s time parked in the garage! But the “lasting” we want to talk about involves vehicles that are put to full use throughout the year but still remain in good shape despite being loaded with massive luggage and driven through rough and mountainous roads for long hours; and sometimes in extreme weather conditions.
The vehicles that top the list of the most reliable cars are the Mercedes Benz, Volkswagens, and Volvos followed by the Toyotas and the Hondas then followed closely by Subaru and so on. The Mercedes Benz has models that have surpassed half a million plus miles. It’s common to come across Mercedes Benz vehicles on the road manufactured in the 70s and 80s doing over 300,000 miles and still strong. I have come across the old Mercedes W123 and ML320 etc. that still run smooth because the owners take really good care of them. The ML320 had almost 700,000 miles on the odometer! The Volvo actually holds the top mileage record of 2 million miles.
Toyota is the world’s largest automobile manufacture since 1937. Toyota vehicles are widely used by the military, construction companies and mining companies. They are quite affordable. Toyota vehicles can survive under high temperature and extreme weather conditions. Toyota vehicles meet the standard because they are quality, reliable and durable. The life and performance of Toyota’s engine is also quite remarkable. Their spare parts are also readily available. Toyota Hilux, Toyota Land Cruisers, Toyota Sequoia, Toyota Tundra, and Toyota Avalon top the list as the most reliable and durable models.
Vehicles with V8 engines will last the longest because their engines will not be strained as much as those with V6 and below engines. Toyota Prius has also proven to be so reliable and fuel efficient just like the Toyota Camry which also wins in terms of power.
Other long lasting and durable models include Honda, Subaru, and Hyundai etc. You should check out the Honda Accord, Subaru Legacy and Hyundai Genesis which seem to attract quite impressive reviews from car lovers. These cars have V6 engines and below but are quite remarkable in performance. The Honda Civic is fuel efficient while the Honda Accord is fuel efficient and powerful. Subaru Legacy is similarly quite good and reliable. The current model consumes less fuel than the original versions.
Most of the research you will find out there is based on average driving conditions and moderate climatic conditions. But you should know that if a car is driven carelessly and loaded with excess luggage, it will not last long. With timely oil change and constant monitoring and replacement of fluids, any vehicle can last for decades. This doesn’t mean that all cars are reliable, there are specific models that have flopped miserably due to their integrity issues, poor workmanship and substandard material used to assemble it.
