Safety tips for Women who are Drivers
A good number of women fear driving. I know of a lady that has never attempted to move the family car. For the last seven years, she has always relied on her husband to take her to work every morning and bring her back in the evening. I don’t blame her. Neither do I blame the ladies that have phobia for driving. Given the number of gory stories aired on television and cases of strange disappearances recorded, this fear is justified.
My advice is that a larger percentage of women need to muster courage and take the initiative to drive themselves rather than rely on their husbands or cabs to reach their destinations.
Below are some of the safety tips for ladies that will keep you safe as you drive alone or with the kids:
- Whenever you exit your vehicle, especially in a town or in a public packing space, ensure that all car doors are locked. Walk around your car literary to check each and every door and confirm that they are all locked. Pressing your car key button alone isn’t enough.
- When you exit your car and parking area, be aware of your surroundings. Screen the vehicles and faces around and try to notice anything out of place. Most thieves lay an ambush just around their target. They will probably be right there under your nose waiting for the opportune moment to attack. Trust your instincts while doing this. If you notice something, take necessary precautions.
- If you arrive from shopping, don’t waste a moment in the parking. Don’t seat in the parking while checking your shopping, phone or receipts. Do all that at home. Doing this in the packing area makes you a target because in most cases, the car isn’t locked.
- If you arrive at a lonely packing lot, especially those darkly lit and scary basements, ask one security officer to escort you to your car, they are always happy to do so especially if you can offer a tip. (Don’t trust the security officer fully, be alert)
- Dear ladies, always put your handbag away from sight. Put your handbag under or on the car floor behind the driver. Do not place your bag on the upfront passenger’s seat or on top of the back seat. Hide your phone or laptop too. These items will attract the attention of the thieves when they pass by and see them.
- Keep your windows up always. Leaving your windows open, especially in traffic, is actually putting yourself in danger. The weather is hot? Try the AC or car fan. You can also leave just a small space on top of the window for air to enter your vehicle.
