I have observed on many occasions that most beginner drivers abuse the horn. The worst are the lorry drivers and the transit or trailer drivers who drive those humongous and menacing machines on the road. One booming hoot from their horns can send one scampering for safety in the most unlikely places.
Therefore, improper hooting may lead to improper reception of the message by the hootee, resulting to wrong action, and sometimes, on the extreme, an accident and/or even death.
The guide below attempts to explain hooting styles and what they mean. They might vary according to country.
HOOTING STYLES AND WHAT THEY MEAN
Pi! –
Greeting someone oncoming whom you know.
Pi – Pi! –
Greeting someone oncoming whom you don’t know or someone you know from behind.
Pii! –
Greeting someone you know who is a little far, is caging, or something like that.
Pi – Piiii – Requesting some help, like in the case you want a gate opened.
Pi – Pi – Pi –
Confirming your location in a crowded place. Like if someone says they can’t see you, that’s how you hoot a notification so that they may notice you.
Piiiiiii! –
Warning a trespasser or a rogue driver or cager ahead of you in traffic who is not so close.
Piii-Piiiiiiiiiiii! –
Warning a trespasser or rogue rider or cager ahead of you in traffic who is just so close.
Pi – Pi! (a 3 or 4 seconds break) then Pi! – Pi! again. –
Calling someone you can see but they can’t see you or they are absent minded.
Pi! – Piii – Pi – Piiiiiii – P – Pii -Pi – P!
Random greeting when you want to greet each person in a group.

Any other area that prohibits hooting
